Help!! Baby Saharan!

dhahn May 19, 2003 06:12 AM

I need some advice on dealing with a baby--I mean extremely small about the size of my little finger (and I have small-med hands--ring size 4.75). I "rescued" this baby yesterday from a snake dealer who had no idea what he had and conditions were not optimal. Baby was alert and moving around a little, but I haven't seen him/her take a bite. He/she also keeps rubbing her/his head and that just doesn't seem like a good thing. I don't know if this little baby will make it (and know it wouldn't have at the dealer) but I want to do the very best I can. I've minced up peas and kale and plan to get some baby food for it tonite, is this okay? Any suggestions GREATLY appreciated. FYI--I have four other Saharans, 2 adult males, 2 subadult females--very healthy, very beautiful/handsome, and very affectionate and spoiled rotten so I'm not a complete novice, just never had an "infant" before.

The temperature that an infant is kept at is critical. I have used just a 10 gallon when they are so tiny to keep the temps up and make sure they are eating, pooping and behaving normally before I move them to a larger tank. I also use a food processor and the veggies are so fine there is not a chance of choking. I have a tiny Saharan also, and she is about 4.5" long. She is doing well and gaining weight, but I was afraid when I got her too, never had one so little. These are just the things I did, you can consult the experts for better advice. If your little one is active that is an excellent sign. Keep us posted.

Thanks--I keep the temp in my larger tank at about 110 degrees--should I keep the baby about the same--right now it's between 100-110--but I read baby's were more heat sensitive due to their small size.
