Never had to do this much shell surgery....

John Q Jul 27, 2003 11:03 AM

The very first clutch of eggs I ever incubated were stacked and by the time I got to them, they were set and stuck for good. I ran out and bought this small rubbermaid container, 4x 4.5x 3.5 tall. It fits in just under the heating element in my hovabator. It seems that every year it has come in handy for at least one clutch. I really prefer to be able to lay out the eggs instead of incubating a stack. In the past, the stacked eggs have ALWAYS started to pip and hatch out from top to bottom. I just figured that the top was warmest since it was closest to the heating element. This clutch started from the sides and then the middle. So far I have had to remove 3 eggs from the top of the cluster and one from the side. The 4 eggs removed have not pipped yet. The middle eggs were getting pressure from the top and I didn't want the weight of those eggs to collapse the ones in the middle that had pipped. A couple of years back I lost a real nice thayeri that got stuck in the egg and drowned. So now I always cut away a section of the shell.
Just curious, has anyone else had a cluster hatch out from the middle?
