ackies vs. bearded dragon....

-ryan- Feb 24, 2006 09:42 AM

So over the next couple years (or sooner ) I am going to have a vacant cage, because I am currently using it to house a very old bearded dragon. I was just wondering if it would be better to get another dragon, or an ackie (or pair, or trio). I definately think the ackies would be more interesting, but I don't think the cage is really all the appropriate for them. it's a 4'x2'x2' enclosure, but it's the top one in a stack of three (due to space constraints), therefore it cannot hold a lot of soil. I have about 2" of soil in it currently for the dragon, and I just can't really see this being very good for ackies. I mean, I could probably squeeze in another inch, maybe two, without any problems, and they would have an easier time burrowing if I gave them something to burrow under (plywood or slate or something), plus I could use nest boxes, but this all seems like various sub-par ways to achieve a good ackie setup, which is why I am leaning more towards just getting another dragon after the one I'm currently housing (since they do not need such deep substrate).

What's your take on the subject?

I'd say another beardie. My acanthurus love to dig around. They have a foot of substrate and love it!

I realized though that a bearded dragon really isn't the kind of reptile I want. Getting another bearded dragon would more-or-less just be an attempt to replace the one I have now. I want to get something because I have a great interest in the lizard.

So now I'm thinking it's a fight between ackies, or some sort of uromastyx. Both do best when they have a lot of dirt to dig in though, so I'll have to try to find a way to provide them with that.

Thanks for the advice though! There's a lot of thinking that goes into buying (investing in) a new species of reptile. That's why I'm starting way early.
