Are my tyrtles eating too much?

ssramasw Feb 24, 2006 01:06 PM

I have a red-eared slider and a florida yellow belly that are both approximately 10 months old. They are voracious eaters. I was feeding them reptomin large floating food sticks at least 2 times a day (about 8 sticks per turtle per feeding) and shrimp treats once a day or once every other day. I became worried that I was feeding them too much based on what I had read here and elsewhere. I reduced the number of sticks I fed them each time to 5 sticks per feeding. However this does not seem enough for them and they are hungry all the time. They have starting eating the floating dock in the tank that I have placed for them to dock on (this is obviously not edible). The dock now has several missing pieces.

from what I have read you are just supposed to feed them as much as they eat in a short time.
Also I have read 1 - 2 times a day for juvinilles is fine. As long as they are eating the food and not just letting it float around in the tank, most animals do not over eat.

Sounds to me like you were on the right track. Once they mature more the will eat less frequently.
