Humidity in turtle tank?

andyuk Feb 25, 2006 02:43 PM

Hi how can i raise the humidity of my tank my map has a ear infection and i know it can be many things that can cause it mainly vitamin A deficiency or too cold tank or it just could be an infection that occurs. I want to raise it any way. It's not cold as it is in a room of a house and it has a lid but i live in the UK so temperatures are not as high as other country's? I have a turtle dock with a basking bulb above which reaches 95 max and i have a UV strip light and i have put another bulb at other end of tank to try and raise the humidity a bit. does anyone have any ideas as i feed a wide variety of foods i feed them wax worms, blood worms, meal worms, water cress, crickets, hoppers, carrots, snails, guppies, melon, and turtle pellets with krill and shrimp in it also i do a weekly water change! Just trying to eliminate all reasons for my turtles infection?
Cheers
Andy

the humidity doesn't matter at all, i have a res, and as long as they have a good amount of water in their tank, it doesn't matter

I would not imagine this is a humidity issue. Your tank has plently of water in it to keep the humidity up.

When you say the water is "ok because it's room temperature," what is room temperature in your house? I had to buy my two yellow bellied sliders a heater for their water because my room temperature was too low. I'm maintaining them at 75/76
degrees F right now and they seem happy as can be.

Hi there sorry forgot to say i got a heater in there water keeping the temp between 78-80. I looked on the web about ear infection in turtles and all of them say lack of vit a and humidity in tank!

Then you need to look into a vitamin A supplement or take them to a vet to get the infection cleared up. I can not imagine the humidity is causing the problem in a "WATER" turtle tank. Humidity is moisture in the water. It can't get much moister than inside a tank full of water.

If you want more humidity in the basking area of your turtle tank, you need a hood. This will trap water from evaporating, and keep it in the airspace above the water.
