I get this vibe that people prefer one or the other when it comes to mountain kings... but I don't understand why. I also have a hard time telling the difference between the two. What do you all think?

well my take is that there are few snakes prettier than a nice example of ANY mtn. king so I may be of little help.
AZ mtn kings and knoblochi are much more common in the hobby and are fairly straightforward in their needs etc. A nod may go to Knobs here since they are generally a bit easier to get started as youngsters and breed well. Again, in my experience.
I always wanted zonata (compulsion to have all the species of kings)and for a while agalma were high on my list. They were the only zonata I had breeding success with but that was due to me not having adult pairs of the others all at the same time.
Still, I will have breeding pairs in the future I'm sure.
When I do... They will be the best to me then!
So, really it's up to your personal tastes and of course availability if keeping them is the at the root of your question, I guess.

I personally also think there is hardly a snake out there prettier than Mountain Kings!
i see lots more pyros than zonatas in the hobby...not because they're that much better/easier,in my opinion...i just think pyros are more plentiful in the hobby,so they're a little cheaper too...usually,a very easy way to tell them apart is pyros having a white snout;zonatas having a black snout...but there are some that have some red on the snout, and you just have to know the diff. other ways-pattern,etc....there's plenty of good books on either or both.
You are right there are some that are very similar, it just matters what type your into. I prefer Pyro's but I don't dislike the others.
If you really want to get confused go take a look at the Ball Python classifieds.. The price can range from Fifteen dollars to Thirty Thousand dollars and i can bearly tell the difference on some of them!
I guess when it comes to snakes... Like most other things in life there is an ass for every seat!

And, just to confuse things a little more there is diversity within the same species.. This is one of my more typical looking Pyro's compaired to one of my high band count Pyro's on my last post. Same type of snake & i own and like both but i prefer the high band count..

Jeez, I've noticed that too. Those guys get really intense with their morphs I guess.
Very nice snakes! I think I actually prefer the lower band counts... so you're right. An ass for every seat indeed!
