Question on bearded dragon behavior

wolffman122 Feb 25, 2006 08:54 PM

One of our new dragons who i think is about 1.5yr old female has not eaten for the first week we have had her except for some meal worms. She just sits under our hide log all day not sunning on the hotspot and the only activity that she does do is dig here and there. My gf and me are really concerned about this should we maybe bring her to a vet please tell me what to do?

You should take all new dragons to the vet for a wellness check and fecal exam, regardless of how they are acting. It is also very normal for them to take a week or 2 to adjust to their new surroundings, beardies hate change. Also quit feeding mealworms, they contain too much chitin in the shell that the beardie can't digest and can build up causing an impaction. Check www.beautifuldragons.com for a good food list.

give any new dragon a couple weeks to adjust to their new homes. as an adult bearded dragon, the female should get mostly greens anyway. i would offer silkworms or superworms to entice her to eat, instead of the mealworms for all the reasons heartmountian already pointed out. getting vet check and fecal is a good ideal.

also, what is the basking temperature of your tank, the ambient temps? is the tank in a high traffic area of the house? is she being housed alone?
