Please Help?

Hello, I need some help in worming my leopard gecko. I asked about it in the leopard gecko forum and i didnt get much help. I was told to get the book Understanding reptile parasites and it only confused me. My gecko Weighs 60 grams and the book say to give 25-50mg/kg of panacur suspension. I cannot find panacur but the farm store sell safe-gaurd which they say is the same thing. How much should i give my gecko? I do not have a reptile vet where i live and want to try this on my own. Please help???

How do you know it needs to be dewormed? Do you know what kind of worms it has? If you don't know, then I would advise against medicating the animal until you know what you are medicating for.

If it has something that Panacur is effective for, then you will need to do the math for the dosing. First, convert the weight of the animal to kg. 30gm will be .030 kg. If the dosage is 50mg/kg, then you will need to fogure out how many mg you need to give for .030 kg. That would be 1.5 mg. Therefore if the strength of the Panacur you are using is 100 mg/ml, you will need to figure out how much you need to get 1.5 mg. That would be .015 cc. A very small amount. The easiest thing to do at this point would be to dilute it with water. If you take 1cc Panacure and mix it with 9cc water, you will have a strength of 10 mg/ml. Then you can give .15 cc, a much easier amount to measure.

Just wanted to add . . . a vet doesn't have to be a reptile vet specifically to id parasites in a reptile . . . a worm is a worm is a worm. Panacur is used to deworm a whole myriad of animals - cats, dogs, rabbits, goats, snakes, lizards, etc . . . any vet should have it available. I second Oldherpers advice of not medicating until you know what worms you are looking at. Different ones need different meds.
