alterna hunter's movie....and the end of a good thing....

chrish Feb 25, 2006 11:59 PM

Just returned from watching a movie shot in alterna country (The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada). Beautiful scenery shots from around West Texas and northern Mexico.

My only problem is that much of it occurs in the Sands Motel in Van Horn. That is my preferred snake hunting motel for Culberson county. Now the rates will shoot up because the movie buffs will want to stay in the Tommy Lee Jones suite!

Guess I have to resort to the other fleabag motel at the west end of town. Damn, I really preferred the sands.

RELAX Chris! It'll be alright dude. I was going to go see this movie yesterday, but didn't make it. I will soon though. How would you rate it??? They didn't at least show one alterna???? I guess the movie wasn't authentic huh? See you in San Antonio next weekend.

How would you rate it???

It was OK. I enjoyed it even though it is a little strange at times. Most of the time I found myself saying, "Hey, I've eaten there" or "Wow, I would love to hike that canyon at night".

There is a snakes scene, but it isn't an alterna, and the scene is very stupid.

Even if you don't like the movie. Just watch and dream of the upcoming season. Beautiful trans-pecos basin and range scenery.

Still haven't see it. Was going to this past weekend but had to change plans. Couldn't take the kids to see this one. Too violent and graphic I understand. Will check it out next week probably. Have you ever seen "Hollywood" portray snakes in a good light or something that is true in nature or make sense??? They could have at least had a scene with illegals traveling through the canyon with flashlights and seeing an alterna crawling up the rocks! Oh well..........

Hey Chris,
Did you ever eat in the good Mexican Restauant on the main drag of VanHorn and see the table reserved permanently for John Madden, Dallas Cowboys announcer?

That place is called Chuys and is "the" place to eat in Van Horn. If you plan on going there....bring a jersey of a player from your favorite team and the owner will put it on the wall. Leave a message for John Madden as he is a regulr there when he passes through.

Many times. Chuy's isn't my favorite mexican restaurant, but it isn't horrible. I don't know that there is better mexican food in Van Horn, but there is a hell of a lot of better mexican food in El Paso.

There is actually a John Madden room now. And Madden never worked for the cowboys. He was an Oakland raiders coach who became a football color commentator (or whatever they call it) for Fox and then Monday Night Football.

They only reason Chuy's has a room honoring him is that Madden doesn't fly so he takes his bus everywhere he has to go to see games. Therefore, he travels on I-10 a lot and likes to eat at Chuys.

Chuy is actually a nice guy. We used to go there a lot when going to and from the Indio Mts with the crew from UTEP. Chuy had a son at UTEP so he was a big Miners fan and always came over to talk with us when we ate there.
