Expanded PVC questions...

kiknskreem Feb 26, 2006 09:08 AM

I have seen lots of talk about this and am looking for a material to replace pegboard as a cage-back material. My first search on google brought up some sign sites saying it can warp, bow, mildew, etc. http://www.fastsigns.com/pvc.html Can someone set me straight on this?

If you still want a perforated back then you should consider perforated PVC or another plastic.

But regarding Sintra and other types of expaned PVC, the downfalls you mentioned are primarily when used in an outdoor application with all of it's UV light and temperature differentials.

The mildew is only regarding the foamed interior, which typically is hidden from the cage interior is the typical reptile cage application.

In my opinion there is no perfect cage material or construction technique. There is always a tradeoff between several factors.

If this is for a solid cage back, I think expanded PVC is fine. But if you plan to buy it and drill a bunch of holes the foamed interior would be exposed to the elements of the cage. I'd recommend plastic pegboard or a perforated plastic, of which there are many.

Thanks Chris. I am looking for a solid back as I'm trying to bump up the humidity and think I will use it. Will hardware stores typically cut it to size for you?

if you are just affixing it to the back of a cage and it will not bear any weight, you can use 1/8" pvcx which you can just cut with a razor knife and straight edge. it takes a couple of passes but you can cut it pretty easy. its about 11$ at usplastics.com for a 2x4 sheet which you can UPS for about 6$

You won't find it at hardware stores in my experience. You'll need to go to plastic shops or sign shops. They usually will cut it for you if you need to get it down to a more managable size.

Like the other poster said, it is easy to cut yourself.

Thanks for the good information. My cage is just over 48 inch long, and causes nothing but problems. Big price jump when you go from a 4' piece to an 8' piece. Guess I'll have to make some more cages.

try Outwater plastics or US plastics. Outwater has 4'x4'x1/8" polyethelene peg board.
