Breeding Advice

AFTfanatic Feb 26, 2006 04:07 PM

Hey everyone, I'm back! I haven't posted for about a month, sorry about that. I've had internet problems. My two Cresties, who I've had for about four months (they were about five months when I got them), are doing great. I'll get pics up as soon as I figure out how. Anyways, my concern is that I'm not sure about what I'm going to do when they breed. Right now I'm getting wrapped up in my Leopard Gecko breeding, and I don't know when the Cresties will mate. Right know they have the same snout to vent length, and Basil, the one with a tail, has a total length of about six inches. Should I be expecting and preparing for eggs later this year? Thanx for any help!

at 9 months of age, you shouldn't be breeding the crested geckos at all. they need to be at least 12 months old, or older, especially the female. the female needs to be at least 30g in weight, with 35g or more better.

breeding them too young and underweight can lead to serious problems in the female, including calcium crash. also, breeding young usually means fewer eggs, weaker babies and burns out the female much faster.

as you are busy with your leopard projects now, i would keep your crested geckos separated for at least another 6 months or more then i ntroduce the male and female for breeding.

Hey, thanx for the advice. I didn't intend on breeding them in the first place. I thought I had two females until a few days ago and the bulge at my harlequin's tail base became apparent. After i posted, I looked into it and have decided to seperate them in two of those exo-terra front opening glass tanks. Right now they're in a 20 gallon (24"L,12.5"D,17"H), and the two exo-terra tanks will be around 15 gallons each. If I still want to breed in six months I'll put them together for a few days. Once again, thanx for your help!
