New Cage Completed - Thanks...

sjenkins Feb 26, 2006 07:46 PM

Well it's finally finished, and I couldn't have done it without help from the members of this and other great boards. I would especially like to thank Chris Harper, whose extensive knowledge and willingness to help was much appreciated. Pictured below is the finished product. It measures 6'x4'x2', the exterior is stained and polyed (4 coats each) with water based products from MinWax. The interior is painted with a black semi gloss acrylic enamel "Bathroom and Kitchen" paint (also 4 coats). The floor of each cage is covered with linoleum which also extends up each wall 2". Each cage is heated with a 11"x24" piece of heat tape controlled by a Herp Power proportional thermostat. There is also 4 18" fluorescent lights set up on a timer. This unit will house 2 RT Boas, a Ball Python, and a GB Kingsnake. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Agreed.. Looks really good. I am in the process of making a monster cage. (10Lx30x30)I have a couple of questions for you sjenkins.. I don't know much about heat tape.. but I am curious with the measurements of tape you have will that get the temps high enough (80-95) depending on snake you put in there of course. Or do you have another heat source also? And will the heat tape not melt the linoleum? I am looking for heat options in my cage.
Thanks.

I am currently reading 99-104 degrees on the hot side, and 79-84 on the cool side. I have the thermostat probe siliconed directly to the heat tape to prevent overheating. I am by no means an expert, but from what I've read these temperatures will by no means hurt the linoleum. For a cage of your size I think you would be much better off with radiant heat panels. Hope this helps.

It is looking good. What did you end up attaching the linoleum with?

Let us know how the paint holds up.
