Bagerhat (UNB): ‘Kalapahar’, the last icon of historical crocodile in the pond of Hazrat Khan Jahan’s (R) shrine pond, died on Sunday ending its nearly 600 years existence at the shrine.
The crocodile was being treated until its death after it received serious injuries in a fight with two other crocodiles at the pond on Friday, said caretaker (Khadem) of the historical shrine.
Hazrat Khan Jahan (R) started rearing the rare species of crocodile at the pond nearly 600 years ago. The male crocodiles of the species are familiar as ‘Kalapahar’ while female crocodiles as ‘Dhalapahar’ for over 600 years.
Hearing the death of Kalapahar, hundreds of people thronged at the shrine premises to see it.
Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner M Moin Uddin said they were trying to preserve the dead crocodile.
