baby corn snake biting

Grelin Feb 26, 2006 10:14 PM

I got a captive bred baby corn snake a week ago. I fed it yesterday, and today it was calmly crawling on my hands when it started nosing at my wrist. Then it tried to bite my wrist. I stopped it, then it started nosing at my wrist again and bit it. I am wondering if this behavior is normal and if I should be worried. Is there anything I should do about it?

It sounds to me like you smelled like something tasty! had you touched anything that smelled like food, handled any rodents?
It is not really normal for a snake to bite you on the wrist, but I would not worry about it, unless it became a common occurance. Baby corns can be nippy (all corns - and snakes for that matter- have their own personalities). Generally it is a finger or something when you are trying to pick it up, when it is on defense or thinks its in danger.

I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once!

I don't know why it was interested in your wrist so much. But I do recommend waiting more than 24 hours (especially on a new snake) to handle after feeding. 48 would be best. That could be why it was nippy. Maybe you smelled like food?

That is very normal for baby snakes. They are real snappy as babies but with corn snakes they quickly grow out of that phase. I love to watch those little quys play tough.
