I have a few questions about African Fat-tailed Geckos and Crocodile Geckos(I"M NOT MIXING THEM)

Herper123 Jul 27, 2003 01:50 PM

1.What should the fat-tailed gecko have in his 10 gallon cage?
2.Is it an easy lizard to breed?
3.How big does a crocodile gecko grow too?

African fat tails are very easy to breed. Its getting the eggs to hatch thats the tuff part. The eggs are more fragile than the leopard gecko eggs and mold up easily. I lost quite a few before any would hatch. One of my females produced 10 clutches her first season while others only produced 4 clutches each.
Never put more than one fat tail per 10 gal. as a rule. They grow up to 10 inches or more and get pretty fat. One of my males is 89 grams. I keep 2 per 20 gal long tank. On one side I have an under tank heater with a humid hide filled with moss and on the other side I keep cool and have a hide there as well. I see them go from one side to the other depending I'm sure on the temp. I do use a full spectrum light on my fatties during the day as suggested by my Vet even though they are nocturnal. They do occasionally come out during the day. The reason for the full spectrum light is so they can obsorbe the calcium. According to my Vet their bodys do not naturally obsorbe the calcium and need the light to do the job for them. At night depending on the temp in my house I'll use a red light. Usually only a 20 watt. just so I can view them when they come out. They are not the most active lizards I've seen thats for sure but they are the most docile and very easy to take care of. Do not make their humid hide too wet or they will get mouth rot. It should just be damp to the touch not sobbing wet.
Good luck with your fatties. Maybe we can swap photos. I have 25 fatties right now of all sorts of colors. Most are orange phase and het for amelanistic.

Crocodile geckos get about 6" but require a the same size/bigger tank as the fat tails because they are very active and need wall space to climb and so on.
