i have my beardie in a 5 gallon tank ....he is a month old. would it be safe to house him in a mesh/wire cage or would heat escape too much????im asking because custom glass tanks are pricey and i make mesh ones........any help?

heat does escape easily in all mesh tanks. unless your ambient room temperature is pretty high, it will be hard to keep the tank at proper temps.
as you build cages already, just make your mesh cages having solid sides, instead of mesh. leave either part of the top mesh or just the doors. you can mount lights underneath the top. the cost of plywood or melamine is a bit more than screening or mesh, but much less than buying a glass tank.
also, if you mean by mesh the 1/4 inch hardware cloth, it would be better not to use it at all, as crickets etc can escape easily and it is possible limbs could be injured on your dragon wh ile they try and climb it. could also cause damage to their faces if they try and push through it. aluminum screening would be better on a bearded dragon cage, on the doors, for ventilation. the mesh could go on top to hold lights etc, if you don't want to mount them inside the cage.
