HELP...baby Racer is Alive!!!

TJ. Feb 27, 2006 11:56 AM

OK...That may have been a strange start...but here's what just happened: Last October I found a pair of hatchling Racers in South Dakota. They were brought home and put into hibernation immediatley. I've been watching them closely and they were both doing fine. Now...this morning...I checked on them and the little female was all stretched out, thin , wrinkled, laying on her side limp as a noodle, no toungue flicking, etc. I thought for sure she was dead so I brought her out to room temperature and 3 hours later she is very much alive, plump and crawling around the container!!! I wasn't going to bring them out till mid April when there would have been more small natural prey available for them in case neither one accepted pink mice. In another week I'll have plenty of live pink mice for her and crickets from the pet store. Any other suggestions to get this thing feeding and going strong? I remember there was plenty of good advice on starting baby Racers a while back. (I know...one of the most difficult!) This is a most un-expected turn of events and I'd feel just horrible if either one of these little beauties dies in my care. Helpful hints??? Thanks! TJ.

Cricket frogs work or hatchling lizards. Once they are started they eat just about anything. frog scented crickets might work make sure they are around 90F when fed keeps um hyper.

I put her back into the cool room. After a couple days of watching her crawling around very slowly I decided she wasn't going to make it if I warmed her up all the way. She's still in sleepy mode. She doesn't look good though and I'll be real surprized if she survives. I've had this happen sometimes with hatchling Fox Snakes. Occasionally you get one with 'bad wiring' and it never completely shuts down...crawling around slowly all winter till the fat reserves give out. We Did have the warmest January on record here in southern Minnesota and I think thats when she 'woke up' and started moving. (Temps in the hibernation room just didn't stay cool enough.) The little male is still lookin good. I'll keep you posted on how this turns out. Thanks. TJ.
