About a million post ago you asked about my skunk. Yes, I still have him and he's the light of my life. Like him better than my kids (jk). Here's a pic of my little darlin. His eyes aren't really red, that's just from the flash. His name is (what else) Stinky.

I love skunks. They are the cutest little things to watch lumbering around in the night. Soooo many of them to be seen in my Toronto, Ontario neighbourhood.
I'd love to purchase one from a breeder, but I just don't think my cat would enjoy a skunk for a roomie. Hmmmm.....

Cheryl, is yours a genetic colour 'variety?' He looks hypomelanistic.

Thanks for sharing.

Like I said in my previous post, skunks are quite common in my neighbourhood and frequently nose around in my flowerbeds for grubs.

Last July a guy delivering me a pizza said he thought he had seen a skunk in one of my bushes in my front yard. I chuckled and told him it probably was a skunk, took my pizza & pizza flyer and went inside. 30 seconds later I hear the pizza guy squeal off. I look out my front window and see a skunk and some 50 pizza flyers scattered on my front lawn. If I only I was able to see the Pizza Man scramble. LOL

A few years ago, a friend told me she had a nest of skunks under her front steps.

I got a call a week or so later. A skunk had been hit on the road in front of my friend's house. A day later, three babies toddled out from under her porch - whimpering and hungry. They could barely walk and just had their eyes open. They looked like four week old kittens - absolutely ADORABLE!

There was one male and two females. The male we named Trouble (he was!), and the females were Pansy and Petunia. We raised them the summer then let them go in our woods when they were able to fend for themselves.

They have to be the cutest thing I have ever raised!

I think they call it cinnamon, don't know why. He looks more ghost (as in cornsnakes) to me. My daughter has a black and white and an albino (Daisy and Ollie). Oh, and he and the cats just stay away from each other for the most part but he does chase them occasionally and he and our dog (golden retreiver/chow mix)like to play. Funny to watch!

If you want to know more about pet skunks, email me.

I've actually been doing some online research on Skunks as pets and just discovered they are illegal here in Ontario. Boooooooo. I don't know why exactly, but probably due to the naive belief that ALL skunks have rabies. Sheesh.....

Maybe I should just get a tiger or lion?(sarcasm) Doesn't seem to be any provincial regulations on the big cats.

Skunks, bad.
Tigers, good.

How's that for twisted logic??.....

They really are a great pet for adults. Wouldn't recommend them for young children, they do bite when they play. Not hard, but still. Plus they're basicly nocturnal. Mine comes out to play around 10:30-11pm, but we're up late so it's no biggie. He has a den in his crate for night time and a den under the bottom shelf of my linen closet for daytime. I often hear him in the early hours of the morning playing by himself in his crate.

I think his color is called cinnamon. Doesn't make much sense to me that's not what I would call cinnamon colored. But then alot of things in this world don't make sense to me LOL.

It is a zoo here. I'm embarrassed to list all our animals in my signature line.

We have in our house:
1.0 Dog
2.1 cats
0.1 Bird (sun conure)
1.0 Skunk
1.0 Guina Pig (about 100 yrs old with one good eye)
1.1 Ferrets
0.1 Bearded Dragon
1.0 blue tongue skink
1.0 Alb burmese
0.1 Blood python
0.0.1 very green Amazon tree python
6.11 ball pythons
1.2 brooksi kings
1.2 honduran milks
1.4 calif kings
1.1 greerii
15.31 cornsnakes
0.0.1 Plecos (algae eater)
0.0.4 Fancy goldfish (one of which has no eyes, sucked off by the algae eater we think)
and many, many mice

I think I listed them all!

Forgot the hamster, also about 100 yrs old LOL

She'll never forgive me.

I can't keep them here in Ontario. They are so cute, and you're making me envious with your stories of them as pets. doh!

If I *could* have them, I'm sure I'd need a 'normal' (Striped) and an Albino to be happy.

Actually he may. I lived in Florida and we had skunks and possums and racoons in our back yard. I had a large Russian Blue male cat who was king of the neighborhood.

One night we heard him scratching at the back door and when I kicked on the lights and opened the door to our surprise was the cat an opossum two racoons and a skunk, no BS, all sitting nicely on the porch with the cat like they were coming in for some drinks with their pal. We were stunned. A cat had befriended the critters in the back yard, I guess struck a truce or something...it was the strangest darn thing.

They've never actually met altho he does like to get into the snake room, that's where I keep the cat and dog food. Skunks are very food oriented!

I do know he doesn't like ferrets. Neither does the dog, Or the cats. Too stinky, I guess. Descented skunks are not smelly at all but they do have an excellent sense of smell (poor eyesight but good nose!).

After our move we are planning on filing to get a permit for a coatimundi (everything is illegal in CA without a permit) - but we were told that we need to be absolutely sure that we keep the snakes away as they (the coati) may have a natural tendancy to kill the snakes - so now we're not sure. But then again I would think a lot of animals might have a natural tendancy to kill a snake, which is why I asked. We would have to take extra precautions I guess. Still haven't committed just yet.

Thanks,

One of these days i might break down buy myself a Kinkajou.(When i get a place with enough elbow room.)

I got the chance to hold one last year. While it is laying there in my left arm(and mildly knawing at my right hand)i ask the guy how old it was... "five years" he says.(I would have sworn it was younger by its actions!)

Kinkajous are a trip I worked at a pet shop thirty some years ago that had a breeding pair. Then someone bought in a single one they couldn't take care of anymore for whatever reason. I fell in love. Tried my darndest to talk the boss into givin' it to me for Christmas. Fat chance. And that long ago I coulda had it for 200 bucks, but bein' fresh outta the army and workin' at a pet shop I could hardly afford it.

Kinkajous are found from southern Mexico down to Brazil and live in tropical forests and rainforests. They eat mainly fruit, but will occasionally eat bugs, rodents and other small critters.

Kinkajous aren't marsupials but are actually a member of the raccoon family (Procyonidae), as are the Coatimundi and Ringtail.

Hope this helps.

Beautiful baby. I had a champain, chocolate and a smoak myself. They're all gone now. One of my girls the champain won Senior Grand National Champion at one of the shows. I miss having skunks, but the state laws changed since I had my three.

Shows are fun. I would sugest going to the Skunks As Pets website and read up on the show and permits you might need for FL. Also the show changes locations. It's been in FL, GA, OH, and AL. that I know of. The judgeing is done on helth and what the judge thinks of as good. Not a set standard of size or percice colors and such. Makes it where almost any skunk could win. They also have catergories of frienliness, best tail, ect. One more thing I like about the show is that injuries due to accidents don't count against you. My skunk that won the Senior had three legs. She had to have the one amputated due to a accident.

The Skunks As Pets website is a great site. I do not know if it being maintained by someone else now (if it is, Shelor probably) since Jane (The Skunk Lady) passed away a little over a year ago. PetHobbyist was saddened by her death as she was one of our old-time moderators. Jane was also a moderator on the AOL pet community. After the increasingly poor manner AOL had been treating its volunteer moderators over the last few years (AOL finally decided to do away with all of its moderators), Jane had actually been seriously thinking about coming back to us as our Skunk forum moderator here on PetHobbyist a few weeks before she died.

A couple of other skunk sites are:

All good sites for info.

The funniest thing is to see the little ones following a mother skunk through the woods. I guess one doesn't see that sight very often because they are nocturnal, but I've seen it during the day. Seeing them run across a road is also amusing because their running motion is so bouncy. From a distance, I couldn't imagine what I was seeing. I would have described it as a bunch of these symbols ~ bouncing up and down.

Nisa Feb 27, 2006 11:17 PM

Acctually a momma skunk will move around in the day more than most skunks. One of the big worries for baby skunks is a Great Horned owl. So she get her kits to follow her during the day while the owl sleeps. Though any skunks will occasionally get up in the day and move around, doesn't mean they're sick, probably just means they got a bout of insomnia.

wftright Feb 27, 2006 11:28 PM

I'm learning a great deal on this thread. Thanks! I guess I've only seen them a few times, but a bunch of babies following momma through the woods is a neat site.
