Continuation of thread below regarding breeding size but this time it's the male hondo's turn.

There's a thread below regarding a female hondo that is not over 400 grams yet but is projected to be more than that after her 2nd or 3rd shedding...in which case, will probably be able to breed. I understand the importance of females having adequate body weight to carry those eggs inside her.

But my question now that I want to raise is regarding a particular male hondo that I have (hatched in Sept 2004). If by around May (which is the time from most females do their 2nd shedding), the male hondo in question is below 400 grams, like 370-380 grams, would that male be able to breed with a good size female hondo? Anyone of you guys able to successfully breed 2 hondos where the male is considerably smaller than the female (say, male is close to 400 grams and female is about 700 grams) ?

Thanks for the input.

Ray, my observation is that a confident small 250 gr male will get the job done while other small males might feel intimidated by a female twice to three times his size which is usualy the case.

Sperm production might be more questionable on a younger male, like you, I have a late 2004 Tangerine Albino male I will be trying, a microscope will help determine sperm count.

So all in all, some small males can and do while most are just too intimidated.

Good luck

Hmm, that's what I thought it would be...i guess I'll just have to see and hope for the best.

BTW, did you get my long email I sent to you last Feb 17th ? You usually respond but this time I did not hear from you.

Hope you're doing well !

it can get done for sure with a small male if he's willing. my male snow was 250 grams or so and i bred him to 2 anery females that were over 500 grams. he was very aggressive, striking and whipping around and finally biting on like a brooks king and getting dragged all around the cage for awhile. he got the job done, though i admit i was a bit worried leaving him in with the big girls, he was snack size to them. kd

Wow, yours was even smaller than my 370 gram male. Well, this is definitely an encouraging eyewitness account. It will be amusing to see my small male honduran going after one of my biggest female hondo and be able to do it. I am crossing my fingers.

Thanks for responding !
