Hemet 2/26/06

Rootsrok Feb 27, 2006 05:36 PM

I was able to herp on sunday with NAFHA. Eimon and I cruised up to Hemet together and met up with about 30. I mainly searched the low hill sides with J. Lemm, eimon, Rick S. and lateralis. My first find was a western skink in which I recorded data for and released. Lateralis held the skink for a photo voucher and Lemm gave me Gps coordinates. This was my first ever caught western skink. I have seen plenty but have never grabbed one until this one...

After A while, I wandered off into some other rocks up a hill and before I knew it, I was all alone. I had enetered some promising looking habitat but unfortunatly it was on a northern facing slope, possibly why I didnt find anything there? Amongst all the rocks, I stumbled upon this skull. I met up with a few others on the other side, the showed me the boa they found and then we herped a bit when myke stumbled upon a Xantusia henshawi (The one pictured isnt the one we found but I thought this was a better pic than the one I got. And lastly, Mykes friend david found a gopher snake crawling up in the rocks and brought it down to show everyone.

After that, some of us decided to go over to another spot. It turned up 5 (?) rubers, a ringneck, a masticophis, a night snake a salamander and a few others. I was fortunate enough to get the masticophis to sit still for some photos, of course he had to strike at me, but then calmed down, for a few seconds. After the masti, Lynum and I went to some rock outcroppings and flipped a variegatus and this, you can imagine the look on my face when this flew at me!

I personally only recorded data for the skink I found. Every other "non common" herp was found by another person, I just happened to be there, so hopefully Bobbie and/ or Dave took the data. It was nice to see ya again Brett, we'll have to get together again soon, Jon
