Brumation question

KenCasstevens Feb 27, 2006 05:51 PM

I am needing a little advice from you folks. I got a late start, and didn't put my breeder Thayeri down until the first of December rather than the first of November like most of you do. My question is can I bring them up in a few days on the first on March, or should I leave them down for a longer period because of the late start? They have been in the dark, and have been kept at 55-60 degrees. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Ken,

I put mine down during the first week of December last year (December 2004), and brought them up about now... the last week of February. I began breeding during the first week of April and had pretty good luck.

without any brumation. It's been many years, but I think they had all fertile eggs too.

but I hibernate all of my thayeri from 1 December to 1 February at the temps you described...maybe a few days in the 40s but overall 50-70. I'd say my results are excellent and I don't change a thing. Breed the snakes, two months is enough of a hibernation and your results will tell you in the end.

Even 8 weeks of cool temps is enough. Most of us quit feeding the 1st of Nov. and let them empty their bowels over the next 3-4 weeks before we start the big chill. You should have good results. I took put my females on heat yesterday. You should too. Good luck Ken

I appreciate all the responces. I've bred other snakes, but this is the first year I'll breed Thayeri. I've really been bit by the bug over the last year. I have 5.5 breeders, and 6.4 young ones with three more little females comming in over the next two days. I can't wait to share pics of my new ones with you.
