High cricket die-off

kittikity Jul 27, 2003 03:06 PM

I usually get about 100 half size and 100 full size crickets at a time.. This usually lasts my reptiles about a week.. But I have been having a large die-off in the last month or so.. I keep each size in a different critter keeper container.. Egg crate pieces for them to hide.. I feed them Fluker's orange cube complete cricket diet.. They're not kept in the direct sun.. I don't think it's because of the place that I get them from.. I get them from a reptile store so they're constantly getting fresh shipments.. Do they maybe need more than the orange cubes? That's the only thing I can figure is the reason that about half of them die off..

Heat is your answer. They are too dang hot! Crickets cannot get too hot, or they die. they are very tempermental about heat too. When I used to breed crix, I had them at a constant temp of 70 - 75 degrees. I had nothing but sucess. I noticed that if I inadvertantly heated them up, many died. I think that if a few die, it causes more to die, but im not an expert in entimology, this is just what I have seen. Get those SOB's cooler, and you wont have a problem.

P.S. - The only other reason I could think of, is mold. It can kill also, so if you have it, get rid of it fast.

hope I helped,
Truth
