I don't know what species it was, but if you develop a morph that talks, I think you'll find a market for it.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
It's a analogy.......having your faith tempted and all that. Eden is the Hebrew word for plains. It is not a proper name.

You mean "allegory"?
Anyway, it's too bad Sean crossposted this to more than one forum. It seems to have provoked some funny responses.
Apparently, kingsnake.com has now become intolerant of other people's religious views?
I made a reply pointing out that this story is allegorical and not meant to be taken literally. Nothing more than that. I did list some othe biblical allegories, but not with the intention of starting a flame war or anything of the sort. I simply was giving more evidence of the bible as an allegorical book.
I guess because I don't share the exact same religious philosophy my post was taken to be offensive? Inflammatory? I do not and have not ever insulted someone's religious perspective.
I have searched the TOS and found NOTHING that violated any rules of the forums. I have been a supportive and cooperative member of these fora since long before there were moderators (I was a big supporter of Jeff B's original alterna page which evolved into this site). I have seen posts get removed from this site for obvious violations, and I have been guilty of that once or twice in the time since these forums first began. But I have never seen such an blantant example of theocratic filtering of the message here.
To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement.
How is it then acceptable that someone ask an off-topic and obviously biased question as the original post? Why is that perspective deemed appropriate for discussion, where my perspective wasn't?

Was just on the other forum. Actually, the whole snake business is irrelevent nonsense.
The Bible says that Satan took the form of a snake to tempt Eve. It is a case of someone impersonating someone else to commit the sin. The serpent is blameless yet gets cursed...why?
Also the 'Biblical' serpent is portrayed as having limbs. Satan may have been impersonating a monitor lizard.

....The leg thing. Good work! We may disagree about things Frank, but I admire that you try to check things out. Hope all is well. Bob

Where do you see that? I'm not a big bible guy (I don't own one), but I looked up the text on the internet and don't see any reference to legs. Are you refering to being told to crawl upon his belly after beguiling Eve? Just curious since I love this kind of trivia.

I do own a bible (never read it) but had to wipe off a considerable amount of dust to open it. I only see "upon your belly you shall go". Which raises the question.........if the serpent will NOW be on its belly, how was it moving before? Surely, if the serpent had no legs, it was probably relieved to be on its belly, as balancing that long body upright on its tail must have been a nuisance. Shortly after this passage is a good one. "your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you". Awesome, how come this doesnt work these days. Just kidding of course. I really like this trivia as well.

That's always been my interpretation, but then the only reason I own a Bible (and a Quran(sp), I don't have a Torah on the shelf yet) is so I can be annoying and show people when they don't understand their own religion...
I pointed this out in another forum a while back. I think it is more of a Qbert type thing (snake bouncing like a spring). And if you need to look up Qbert, it was a video game before all this Xbox Live, Internet, Network crap! When video games had no purpose other than to take your quarters- and we liked it that way!

Yeah, allegory, not analogy...but the bible has tons of both, including 2 different Creation stories.

Actually I never saw anything mentioning legs SPECIFICALLY in the Bible. However, the crawl on your belly bit was interpreted by the Early Christians as meaning exactly that, which is why frequently you see paintings of the Temptation from the early to medieval period portayed with a legged serpent.

The descriptions thus far suggest that God changed the form of an animal from something that did not crawl on its belly to something that did.
Can I interpret this to mean that God created evolution?
Interesting, but didnt god make everything in its present form through his (or her or it) "intelligent design".

My CREATOR is not a DESIGNER. Or is he/she/it?
Its moments like this that make me glad to be an atheist.
It again should be noted that in 1996 Pope john Paul said that Evolutionary Theory was not necessarily in conflict with the Bible.
The evidence of Evolution is undeniable to anyone whose head is not stuck the sand of extremist fundementalist religeous dogma.
If I were to look from a religeous view point, I might ask...were we not given eyes to see and a mind to interpret those remains (fossils) that were left to show us our past...instead of hiding behind our fears and vanity to assume we are somehow exhaulted to the point where we deny what we are?
The evidence is there. To assume a cosmic trickster (Satan) went through so much trouble to provide billions upon trillions of bits of evidence to steer our beliefs past the gospel of Genesis, is perhaps the most damning statement about the self proclaimed "experts" that try to shove their superstion into our schools and constitution.

"Its moments like this that make me glad to be an atheist."
Same here. Believe it or not my daughter's Geometry teacher is actually teaching that evolution is a lie. I keep suggesting she ask stuff like why do we have vestigial organs like the appendix.
Your nicer than I am. I would have her before the school board to explain why a "Geometry" teacher is teaching theology which clearly is not under her job description.
Frank

I don't know about being nicer than you. Probably not. I do know that teachers in my District do not have a "job description" but rather a contract. Included is the following:
"2. In the spirit of academic freedom, employees will create a classroom atmosphere which invites in-depth study of the critical issue(s) of the day. The classroom environment shall be conducive to investigation, interpretation, analysis and evaluation of data on all sides of the critical issues under study. The employee is responsible for exercising sound judgment in selecting for discussion those issues which are relevant to the maturity and understanding of the students involved."
I kind of like this and it is probably contrary to most peoples' experience with public education At any rate, dragging before a School Board is probably not an option with this contractual protection. My daughter is 99 percentile on the NRT so I am sure some math is coming through. The other part is just a sidebar.
"...evaluation of data on all sides of the critical issues under study."
There is the point.
Relegion, and Evolution have no "critical" bearing on the subject of Geometry. You did not enrole your child into that class to discuss anything other than the described course. In know way does a discussion of relegious issues propel the teaching of Geometry. In fact, it takes time from the subject she was hired to teach.
The teacher is in conflict with her contract. If she were teaching History, Civics or a like subject, the expounding of her views would be relevant.
Now if she changes her course description to "Geometric Religeons" or can explain how discussing relegion advances her class in Geometry, then perhaps it would justify her discussing things of that nature.

Let's not get too excited because I am at fault for providing an incomplete context. I don't think these events are occurring during Geometry class but rather during the homeroom preceding the class. Students are allowed to present their own views. I just can't get too excited over my daughter being exposed to something she has to learn to defend herself against for the rest of her life. I am not even sure this is not the point of the exercise (critical thinking).
Teaching is a beleagured enough occupation that I would never consider flying off the handle just because an individual doing an otherwise good job has a little eccentricity.
Hardly flying off the handle here. Its just idiocy disguised as education gets my grumpy's up.
It s like you think some intelligence would shine through...but then there's the changing Supreme court and the Bush brothers.....

"The luxury of not getting involved departed with the last lifeboat Skipper..."
Understood. I think human nature causes us to express righteous indignation as a theory. In practice I think most parents would approach the teacher directly without some major school board intervention.
Of coarse this is idiocy. My initial reaction was surprise as well. If this occurred at a younger grade (which it does in December of every year) I would be more concerned. Fact is, I calmed down and realized the maturity level of the audience (at least my daughter) could handle the absurdity of the situation.
PS I think my President is doing this country a great service by eliminating the chance for the next Bush to get to the White House. If we can only survive a few more years.
