Bed-a-beast impaction

Fyrbrand Feb 28, 2006 07:27 PM

Hi all, just wanted to share this with you and elicit some opinions.

My pacman frog hasn't eaten in 2 weeks or so, which isn't entirely unusual, but it had been even longer since she pooed, and she wasn't looking quite "right." I took her to our awesome herp vet, and it turns out her entire gut was impacted with bed-a-beast. We were both shocked, as neither of us has ever heard of such a problem with bed-a-beast. You could feel it in her though, and the xray clinched it. Definitely the substrate blocking her up.

So, after an enema (and boy was that an adventure, my vet's first on a frog!) we're back home with antibiotics and a laxative/stool softener. I have some questions I hope someone can help with.

Assuming she makes it (and it's really touchy at this point, unfortunately) I'll need to reconsider bedding. Is there another bedding someone can suggest I try? Moist papertowels will work, but frankly I think it's important to simulate a natural environment and towels don't do that. Still, health comes first.

It also occurs to me, if I switch to strict tong-feeding, and eliminate crickets (which I hate anyway) I could potentially keep the bed-a-beast. Any thoughts on that?

Finally, any suggestions on giving a pacman oral meds? Keeping in mind, of course, that she has no appetite and is stressed out. I'm not looking forward to doing that every night, I can tell you!

Any suggestions are welcome, and very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Bill and Boba Frog

I, unfortunately, cannot give any advise in regards to medication, but, from what I've read, tong or hand feeding is the best way to go to prevent impaction. I've also read that it might be a good idea to move the frog on a log or a rock to feed it, again, to avoid ingestion of substrate.
