Can I use a dried GOURD for a hidebox?

SSScott Jul 27, 2003 04:28 PM

Hey everyone,

I was thinking about using some dried gourds for hides...

Is there any reason that any of you know of that I shouldn't???

Of course I would sterilize it well before placing in cage, (completely wash down with nolvasan, put in dishwasher without soap, then put in the deep freeze for 3 or 4 weeks) But does anyone know of any toxicity issues with gourds? Lemme know.

Scott

I don't know about gourds, but I have some dried coconut shell hides which work well for my smallest snakes--I merely scraped out the insides then dried them in the sun. I wonder how well dried gourds will withstand the dishwasher and then the freezer. It's a creative hide idea, and I'd be interested to know how you make out. Best of luck!

umm gourds.....let me just say this is only my opinion .
i know people have made ornaments pots even cooking utensiles out of them and when dried and cleaned are of similar qualities of wood....as in toxcidity i do now know so as a precaution i would give them a coat of waterproof varnish ......it will make cleaning them easier too.apart from that they should be fine.
