Gopher behavior

pest Jul 27, 2003 04:30 PM

I recently found a small gopher sanke on the road in southern California. I have noticed that the snake tends to retreat beneath the sand in the cage. I was unaware of this behavior. Is this normal? Do they ambush prey from beneath the sand like the horned viper of Africa, or is it just to hide?

By the way, does anyone know how to determine the sex of gophers?

are and love to burrow. They will burrow down under the substrate quite a bit. Some people keep 2 to 3 inches of substrate for them to do this. Have you put a hidebox in the cage for the gopher? There's several ways people use to determine sex in snakes. To each his own and what they are comfortable with. Tail shape, popping, and probing are the main ways to determine sex. I have Del Alspaw probe mine to dtermine sex. Has the gopher been eating for you? Good luck with it.
