Strange Behaviours

r3ptyl Mar 01, 2006 12:04 PM

I've been seeing some strange behaviours:
The first behaviour was some days ago he was completely still and only moving his tail in circles and sometimes he would stop and make very regular "waves" with his tail.

I saw the other behaviour just now, he was opening and closing his mouth repeatedly, i thought he was regurgitating but than he started waving his head very quickly and he hit the glass of the terrarium, than he stoped and started licking his face.

What can you advise/warn me about this?
Should i worry about this? Or is it normal?

My gecko is a male juvenile. If you want some more info just ask.

I may be way off base here, but is there a chance he can his reflection in the glass? The tail waving seems to be a show of excitement when they come across a stranger in their midst, or possibly a breeding behavior. Hitting the side of the tank may have been an attempt at an attack on what he thought was an intruder. JMHO.

Males use there tails in displays related to breeding. Basicly a male will wave or shake his tail at another leo. If the other leo is a male it will wave back and then all hell breaks loose, ie. they fight.

If the other leo is a female she will either accept him or deny him using her own set of signs. Yours may have seen his reflection wave back and tried to fight it, thinking it was a rival male.

Hah! Imagen if humans were like that! One guy waves at another guy...The other guy waves back, and then they procede to beat the snot out of each other. Hehe...

I have a few juvie males and they do tend to display when nothing is around. I guess it could be all the new hormones, or just practice. Mine will also rattle their tail when hunting crickets sometimes if they get real excited.

These behaviors don't sound unnatural and I would not worry to much. Maybe someone should write an article on leo behavior. It is very interesting and I know anyone who keeps leos would be interested.

I have a female leo and when she was young she did similar things. The tail waves I specifically recall. I have a leopard gecko male in the tank beside her and sometimes they see each other. My male gecko never seems interested, but my young leo always runs over to the glass and walks it or trys to climb. She also has nightly parades around her tank climbing all over and searching out all the nooks and crannys. I think much of the odd behavior like this is stricky being young and full of energy.
