waxworm question

anafranil Mar 01, 2006 01:35 PM

I have bought waxworms for the first time today just for a change and to try something different.I got them in a small container with some woodshavings,so I put them in a small jar with a mixture containing oatmeal and honey.I have seen them everywhere except on the food. Are they supposed to act like this? Also do you put another medium in the jar except their food?

Hi - did you get the recipe from the sites I linked for you earlier? You need to mix and cook it. it is also best if you can get some beeswax (not sure about Cyprus, but most natural food stores sell it in pieces). I use a cheese grater to "shave" the wax into the mix before cooking so that it is less chunky and blends in better. You need to make sure the honey is not too runny or they will be unable to move around.

If you are only using these to feed off to your veiled you can leave them in the wood shavings. The food mixture is usually used if you want to bring them to pupation and then to adult moth and breed. Remember, these are fatty feeders and should not be fed in excess.

Thanks about those forums, very useful, nice details.
It's the cooking part I did bot get.I didn't understand you have to cook it first. So after cooling down should I expect it to not be sticky? For a first attempt and to make sure to quickly feed them would oatmeal or wheatbran with honey do the job?
One more thing,I seen dark spots on them that weren't yesterday. Is it perhaps of lack of food?
Thanks

you dont HAVE to cook it, it is just easier to work with once it is hardened and crumbly. It will still be sticky - the trick is to not use TOO much honey.

The black spot is usually the beginning of death. it is usually due to damage (they got poked or cut) They turn black and die and stink! Whenever you see a black one remove it immediately.

what sort of container do you have them in? I use a plain plastic container, fill about 1/2 way with medium (food/substrate) and do not even cover. They won't climb out.

of the sites I gave you I think this one is the easiest to follow
