From the stone age.......

repzoo44 Mar 01, 2006 04:23 PM

I just recently got an old nikon N8008. Id prefer the DSLRs but alas, money is an obstacle. Id like to get a macro lens for some close ups. Anyone have any strong opinions about getting a macro lens as opposed to the filters you can "stack" on to get the macro effect. Im not looking to be published in National Geographic but I would like to get some good shots. Im sure that the macro lens is the way to go, but what about the other way. Thanks for the input.

The 8008 is a great film body. I have one too. Unfortunately, it's been collecting dust since I bought a digital. Those closeup diopters really are designed to use on lenses of 200mm focal length or greater. A Nikon 70-300mm lens would be a cheap and good lens to try with the close-up diopters. If you have a shorter lens like a 50mm, extension tubes would be an easy and affordable way to get nice macro shots.

macro on the cheap

I can get the zoom lens for it for relatively cheap. I bought it from my photo teacher and he still has the zoom. I think Ill just suck it up. I enjoy photography, but I really like getting up close. I havent really fooled with this camera much yet (just got it yesterday). The only thing Im not liking right now is how you change the aperture, but Im sure it will be fine. Cant wait til the prices drop on the digitals. We use the canon dslr at school, very nice. Ever shot any infrared film? I also got some filters with the camera, one being for infrared, Im kind of excited about trying that out. Thanks for the help.

No, I haven't tried infrared yet. There is a well known photographer named Bjorn Rorslett who does IR and UV stuff. You might find his web site interesting.

Here is the link. Look to the menu on the left to find the IR and UV material.
