Enclosure Question

nymph Mar 02, 2006 12:33 PM

Ok, I was just wondering what lighting everyone likes to use, and what they do at night. Also has anyone tried using Nekton because I heard that it helps thier color a lot and is worth the money. Thanks.

I use ZooMed's reptisun 5.0 for UVB and so do many keepers. There is a 10.0 out now but I don't think the jury is really in on it yet. I would steer clear of the Mercury Vapor Bulbs (Power Sun, etc.) especially for a baby - you'll have fried chameleon!

Your bulbs should be replaced every 6 months to maximize output. I write on the end of the tube the date I put it into service so I know when to replace. The output is less at either end so get one as large as your setup can handle. For instance, if you have a 4' bulb, it is the 3 feet in the center that are putting out adequate rays.

Regular incadescent bulbs are fine for his basking light. Experiement with a few wattages to see what works best. Did you get a temp gun? Worth every penny!

I have never heard of Nexton, maybe someone else has...?

Night, do nothing. A 15-20 degree drop is fine. If he is in an escpecially cold room you can through a towel or balnket on top. You can also use a ceramic heat emitter but only if REALLY necessary.

Check the Nekton bottle and see what form of vitamin A it has. If its from a preformed (not beta carotene) source, then it can build up in the chameleon's system.
