meller's chameleon

micky-kennie Jul 27, 2003 06:50 PM

I was thinking about getting a meller's chameleon and have a cage that is 5 feet tall, 18 inches deep and 22 inches wide, will this be large enough for a full grown adult? Also what humidity range do these chameleons like?

Thanks!

Melleri require large cages when adult. The measurements you described isn't going to be large enough. As for humidity, i kept (last year) mine at about 75-80 percent. I live on the central coast so i don't always keep it like that. The one i currently have (2 1/2 months old) is young so i don't keep the humidity that high.
If you get one try and get a baby or juvenile as adults are wild caught and generally don't live long..
They're awsome though..

How big do you recomend a cage for a mellers once it is full grown?

I would either go with a 4x4x6 ft. They require more room than say a panther or veild due to their size and roaming.

Yes, The depth and width of that enclosure are too slim. 18" is very bad as they grown to be 24". I think you could get away with a 5ft enclosure but a 6ft high will always be better. I'd reccomend a 3' x 3' x 6'. Melleri like most chameleons prefare a higher humidity, 70% or higher.

Actually, even that is not large enough IMO. Some melleri will injure themselves trying to get out of any cage. My MINIMAL cages for melleri were 6'x7'x8' tall. Some will not accept any caging at all, so you should consider free ranging them in a room. Go to www.chameleonnews.com for recent melleri articles and check out the melleri forum on Yahoo Groups.
