fogger in tank

tadpole4 Mar 02, 2006 07:34 PM

My frogs have been in the tank since 10:30 am this morning. Tonight when I turned on the fogger my female went nuts and started climbing the walls, she stopped when I turned it off. so now I guess I figure out a way to use it outside and tunnel the fog into the tank or return the fogger and just get a good hand mister. Any suggestions?

I personally think the small ultrasonic foggers are worthless. They spew water drops around at high velocity, can be dangerous to your frogs, and crap out after a couple of weeks. While they don't work well with distilled water, hard water cruds them up quickly. The one I'm thinking of is a fat little disc that works only under an inch or so of water, which it quickly dissipates. As lovely as fog is floating around in a tank, these little ultrasonic fogger discs just don't do the job. Until I can get something for technically feasible to creat fog outside of the tank and push it in, I've just resorted to hand misting, using one of the simple pump sprayers for home and garden. You can get 2.5 pint ones that are easy to handle at any nursery. Mine are RL Flomaster Premium, home and garden sprayer.

I forgot to congratulate you on your new azureus pair. They'll settle in quickly. Since they are among the largest of the dart frogs, you might want to move them to a 20 gallon sometime in the future for more space. It's not absolutely essential, but they do seem to use extra space and some of the larger broad leaved plants that will support their weight, for egg-laying. A 20 just gives them more choice.

Thanks! I am planning on upgrading the tank to a 20gal tall or a 29gal. I want to get a plan in mind and get the plants goin for a few week before I move the frogs in as I do not want to disturb them too much by messing around in the tank worring with the plants and such.
I fed them this morning for the first time, the male is not very active and spent all day yesterday hiding in and under the log. I couldn't tell if heactually ate any flies because he still didn't come out much. On the other hand the female hopped all over the tank in search of the flies. I am sort of worried about him, I don't know what is normal behavior or how long it should take for them to settle in and feel comfortable and safe.

I have a how-to article on my site that shows how I add fog to my tanks. I use the conventional ultra-sonic humidifiers you get at wal-mart/target/etc. and plumbed it into my tank(s). Works great, lasts forever, and creates a nice effect. Check it out at http://www.joshsfrogs.com/howto.html

Thanks for the info! Great site Josh. any suggestions on how to configure the set up you have so that the hummidifier is concealed from view? My husband is not as into this as I am and wants everything to remain contained and concealed other than the VIV itsealf ofcourse.

To conceal the humidifier, I would just put it behind the tank. Then run the hose into the lid (behind the lights. Should be out of view then.

Some people have modified the version I have posted and use a flexible line. That would make it easier to hide.
