middle east monitors

This question is kinda a shot in the dark. My friend had been stationed in kuwait for 9mths and had told me storys of large lizards (6ft )and i know nothing of the herps there. I was just wondering what large monitors (i am assuming its a monitor) are native to that area and that could grow that large.
thanks

I believe the only monitor on the Arabian peninsula is Varanus griseus, the Desert Monitor. They don't get to 6 feet (4 is about their max) but people tend to overestimate the length of big lizards, just like snakes.

There is a good write up about grises here www.mampam.50megs.com/monitors/griseus.html
