jeanette74 Mar 03, 2006 05:39 PM

Im confused about the lighting requirements-Ive been told that russians really dont need the UVA/UVB light-then other people say it is a must-I have one on them now -what are the pros and cons of the UVA/UVB?

any tort needs uva/b if the tort is outside for atleast an hour a day they get all the light requirements naturally. if they are inside but you plan to put them outside soon then don't worry about it. if you plan of keeping them indoors long term get a light. hope this helps.

UVB is essential for proper calcium metabolism. Being an animal that is normally basking much of the day in the wild, they need 10-12 hours of UVB exposure daily. A good quality bulb (reptisun 5.0) should be kept approx. 12 inches from them and replaced yearly. Although it will still produce light, the UVB component dramatically decreases after a year. good luck with your little guy,

Steve
