Problem with NAFHA Mojave Herp Trip

sanclementesnake Mar 03, 2006 10:33 PM

I hate to break the bad news but here it goes: There is a desert off-road race the same weekend in the same area. There will be lots of traffic. It would be dangerous for use to be on the race course but its up to you guys to figure it out. Again I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but I am a little concerned.

Well here's the link:http://www.moreracing.net/schedule.htm

Thanks for the information, but it will not effect the rocky ridge or surrounding area; im still going. (besides myke did not post this message so it means nothing except thanks for the update.

I live and herp here quite frequently. Its my own backyard so to speak. When I read the post concerning this trip, I almost posted a reply but figure you all know what you're doing. But as for me, knowing the area as well as I do, I never herp this area on the weekends due to the locals that are out partying and blasting around the desert in their quads and what not. And thats just a normal weekend. If there is a race scheduled for that weekend, all I say is watch your back....front...and anything else that is liable to get clipped by a weekend warior. I herp this area a lot of times right after dinner on a weeknight. Thats the only safe time to go.

Yes that race is concerning, and its nice to be aware of such events that might disrupted the Mojave Trip. I am not sure where Myke wants to explore, so he will definitely need to check this news out. When I have searched Stoddard Ridge in the past, the locations were well beyond that shown on the track-map and several miles south of Slash X. However, I’m not sure if Myke’s locations are anywhere near this course so this could be a problem. I also agree the area is busy with off-road vehicles during a normal weekend, so a race could make it crazy.

Hey Will, I checked the site and map Justin referred. This could be a real big problem. It's a major organized off road race that's coursed right thru the area we planned on being in. Including going right next to Slash X. Myke needs to check this out and give us his opinion from his experience with the area. That amount and kind of traffic alone could impact the herpability substantially.

Some have emailed me saying...

"Oh no Myke there will be a ton of OHV in the area."

As some of you have discovered there is an OHV race in the area on the same day. I knew this from day one and hoped it wouldn't need to come up but since it has here is why it does not worry me. Stoddard Valley is a huge area. It takes 20 minutes to drive through it at 40 mph. (20 miles give or take!) The OHV people stick to the trails that loop, we stick to dead ends. The areas we will be in will not be on the race path so it will be ok. Trust me Stoddard valley always has something going and I knew about this race a month ago. Racers avoid Bell MTN. and do not venture into the hills. We will be ok, trust me I knew about this, Slash X is hosting the finish, which is why we are going there at 5pm, so that it is cleared out. I was hoping know one would find out so I didn't have to waste time explaining why its not a big deal, oh well that didn't work and now there is paranoia. Races are the nature of Stoddard valley, knowing where to go is the key. In fact Ord Mtns. in the same area are OHV restricted and highly enforced. Worse case scenario we just head left, its all in the same area. In any case there is enough room to go around. Besides you never we wouldn't be herping where OHV go because everything would be smashed.
