albino hogs

repzoo44 Mar 04, 2006 11:38 AM

I remember some talk a while back about albino hogs possibly having genetic problems. Are there still questions about this or are they just as healthy as normals. Thanks

I bought my origionals from the Us(renegades and richard Evens) and have out crossed them to my own normal hogs and have only bred het ot het and het to unrelated visual in order to get the best genetics. The albinos i bred lasy year are growing at a fantastic rate!!!

simple solution. Outcross whenever possible. Because of the price of albinos and hets when they first became available there was quite a bit of breeding back to a parent. Albino male to as many normals as you have, keep the females, raise them, and breed back to dad to produce albinos. No problem there, it's a standard breeding strategy. The problem MAY come up when the offspring are sold in pairs and bred to each other. When buying albinos and hets it's best to ask about the history of the breeders. Although your buying from two well known and trusted breeders, they may be working with the same stock. Most breeders will agree that they have greater success when breeding albino to het then if they breed albino to albino.

I have 5 different bloodlines of albino hog which i have totally outcrossed, so technically thats 10 lines now, so when i sell a pair i can guarentee they are unrelated. I usually sell albino to 100% het, Ive yet to have anyone buy a pair of visuals.

I will add that I bought a pair of babies that were from visual parents and the female died within about 2 months and the male survived to be outcrossed but then died after his first year of breeding!
