thinking of getting a horned frog

grungerockguy Jul 27, 2003 08:21 PM

hi all. I used to have a little pacman frog when I was a kid but eventually the stinch of the crickets and taking care of the frog became too much of a responsability for me. I am 16 years old now and a little more mature but I still think I will face a few new problems. First of all I am looking for some chicks now and I dont know how having a pet frog will go over with them. Additionally, I think I might be getting too old for this hobby of mine but im still a kid at heart lol. Anyone have any advice or support for me?

Hey I'm almost 21 and I have more pets than just about everyone on this forum except a few other very dedicated people. I even still go feild collecting even though I get some odd stares cause they know I look like an adult but think i am acting about 14. But when I tell people about my pets they are amazed, so it won't hurt you getting a relationship unless the girl is deathly afraid of frogs.

I am a stay at home Mom of 2, and you couldn't take ANY of my animals from me.In fact I would think you would want potential girls to know what they are getting into ( I know a few people who love animals but they are with someone who doesn't so.....).
Most of my friends and family think my crew is really COOL and run over when I get something new.I have never found one person yet that didn't think feeding a pacman wasn't a really fun experience to watch.Good luck and post a picture of your new frog when you get him !

Personally, I think if your too worried just about the girls, not likeing your little frog, don't get it.

BE YOURSELF!!! If girls don't like you for who you are, then tough luck. I'm sure there are many girls, who would be very excited about knowing you own, a horned frog, somemay be a littlecreeped, but most will just leave the thought alone.

I own(Not much,lol);
-A Green treefrog
-Two Firebellied toads
-A Japanese firebellied newt
-An American toad

And I also own some birds, which in truth are probably my true passion, in creatures(Specifically parrots), which people make fun of me for, but when they actually get to see them in person, they fall in love with them!!!I am knowledgable in lots of things to do with herps, but for a kid my age I am probably very close to being the Colchicine of the bird world. People say they would like to own a bird in the near future, after seeing mine. I have never met someone who did not enjoy my birds, and most enjoy my frog collecton aswell. There's others though who aren't really interested(Don't care), but don't hate them.

So I also own;

-Two handfed(VERY TAME,...AND SMART)cockatiels
-Two budgies
-ans Two orange cheeked waxbills

Goodluck, with your decision...
Steven

thanks for the much appreciated help everyone. You made a good point about being myself. I think I will let everyone know I like frogs! muhahaha. Seriously, thanks a lot and I have made the decision to purchase a frog. I look forward to posting on these boards for help with the care of the frog.

It is really cool. Whenever we have people over, we always show them our frogs and usually feed them, if needed, to show how they eat. We had a party with 50 people last week, and half the people were standing around looking at the frogs because they were so amazed by them. These were everyone from a few older women to some young "girly" girls who I thought would be terrified or repelled by frogs, but they were all amazed and surprised by how cool they were!

Trust me...chicks dig the frogs! I am 17, am always out looking for chicks and surfing, and have been in the hobby for years. The good thing about a frog is that it is pretty much a neutral animal. Snakes...now those can go either way (bad reaction/good reaction...got a 50/50 chance) but frogs don't seem to have many critics. And you can never outgrow them...this hobby is not so much made for kids as it is for adults. Andy

Yeah you don't usually have the size and varied selection of herps that I do if you are under 18, unless you are really good with your parents. I'm almost 21 and getting even more into this hobby day by day. And when I say my frogs have teeth they are in awe, what they don't realize though is most frogs have teeth. LOL

Hey, I am a "chick" and I love frogs! And snakes, lizards, you name it. I kinda dislike dogs, not all, just ones that walk all over their owners. I guess I am not normal? As a kid my friends and I would go get real muddy and catch frogs/toads/sals/snakes. I guess I was a tomboy then?
I had a reverse problem; Most guys I dated gave me the "confused, baffled look" when I said I liked frogs. Couldn't see why I'd want them as pets.. lucky for me I found a guy who's just as weird as me (turns out we both shopped at the same pet shop as kids, hee hee.) Now I have to restrain him from bringing more frogs home!
Find yourself a weird girl like me; we are better than those snotty ones!

Plus with all of the amazing colors some frogs have(Darts,Mantellas,Tree Frogs), a lot of people find them very attractive. A lot of people are repulsed by frogs, but even more people find them to be fascinating. I know a lot of girls that love my frogs, but don't get why I'd want to go into muddy pools of stagnant water and areas where there are a ton of insects just for some animals.

Bill

Don't read so much into it...I know plenty of girls that are herpers. But the fact is, most are guys. And not to be stereotypical, most girls do not seem into the herp hobby. Yet almost all of my friends that are girls think the frogs are cute, though given the area I live in, it is rare to find girls that will do so much as touch a snake. So I did not mean to sound condescending or advocate the whole stronger/weaker sex stereotypes. I was just telling my view of the situation as he voiced concern. Andy

Gin.. I'm not much of a dog person myself... but we just adopted one tonight and I can bet my life on it that you'd fall in love with this little girl. GAWD is she a sweetheart!!! She was a rescue, her previous owners moved out of their apartment and simply left her in a fenced in section!!!! She is SOO well behaved and definitely knows who the boss is. Heck, she even sits when my 2 year old tells her to!!! She is one smart little puppydo!!

I mean...do you have to listen to other people? Why not set your own trend? be original. I love all animals, and I have tarantulas, scorpion, frogs, and hamster...and a snake. Just do what you love and don't listen to people.

amazinglyricist Jul 29, 2003 07:29 PM

Knot you actually made sense in a post. Big applause. LOL

You never outgrow your need for frogs. I'm a 70 year old great grandmother, and if you want to see something weird, it's probably me in my straw hat with a big butterfly net chasing field plankton. Don't ever grant people the right to judge your interests.

Yeah it helps keep unwated people away from me as well. I'm almost 21 and when I go herping I just grow a lot of facial hair and confuse people, cause I look about 15 or 16 but then again I have so much facial hair they don't wanna make them selves look like idiots by talking to me like a kid or an adult. I really like those confused looks I get, they're the best.
