beardie&baby corn

megalon Mar 04, 2006 03:21 PM

my beardie, trouble,is a male, about 17".he'll eat all the insects, pinkies, baby anoles, etc, that i give him(he even ate a minnow one time, but that was just to see if he would, lol).basically,if it moves,he eats it.he's never been too big on his veggies, however.but lately,he's shown some interest in frozen stir-fry mix, which i thaw & give a rough chop to.my question is,he has really taken a shine to the baby corns in the mix.he only gets 1 or 2 small(1/2 "ears a week, which get promptly devoured.is corn ok for beardies?i can't find this info anywhere.he also loves hibiscus & roses when they bloom.thanks for any help!

Unless your dragon is younger than 14 months, he really shouldn't be getting any insects other than a few a day, or a feeding 2-3 times a week. All other times, he should be getting a wholesome green mix.

I would not feed anoles to bearded dragons, or minnows, as both could contain a whole pack of parasites and cause other problems. Pinkies should be a rare treat, like once a month at the most, though unless you have a breeding female, you don't need to feed them at all. Silkworms, butterworms, roachs, etc, are much better for bearded dragons.

When you mentioned feeding baby corns....I thought for a moment you were feeding baby corn snakes to your bearded dragon LOL. corn is ok as an occaisonal vegetable, but not as a daily food. A great site on nutrition of greens, vegetables and fruits for bearded dragons and how frequent to feed them, if at all, seethe nutrition chart at:

ok,maybe i should have been more specific.trouble gets superworms every other day or so,7 or 8 worms at a time.he only gets crickets once a month or so,as honestly,he doesn't like chasing them.the one time he ate an anole,i got it from a friend who breeds them as food for his trans-pecos copperheads.that was more his idea then mine, but trouble didn't seem to mind.the minnow was also a one-shot deal, just to see if he would.as for pinkies, maybe 2 a month.i've had trouble since he was just a little squirt, and like i said earlier,he's 17" now,so i've got a more than basic idea of how to keep him happy.he has ample opportunity to graze on "spring mix"lettuces, kale, collards, etc, plus fresh dandelions, baby peas, limas,& other veggies;even if he doesn't eat all of his veggies,he gets a small amount fresh every other day or so,alternating bugs w/ salad.i was just wondering about baby corn, but thanks for the lecture, lol.jeez,i feel like i'm writing a book here.as for feeding him snakes,no way,i like snakes way more than lizards, even little corn snakes.trouble came along when my 10 yr old son "promised to do everything to take care of him"which lasted a week or so.trouble has since evolved into a family pet, which means dad does all the work.oh well,he's more than worth it,& i might just get him a girlie soon.thanks, though!
