Heat question...

kovuu86 Mar 04, 2006 04:42 PM

Hey guys i have a 12" wide setup for a new neonate. I havnt bought it yet as i am still testing out the cage and trying to get it perfect before i buy the snake. But... im having a little heat issue. I have 3" flexwat running from the front to back, on the left side of the cage, connected to a Big Apple Herp thermostat. Well i have the thermostat all the way to 105, and the hot side is no where near that.

I have a horizontal thermogradient which goes like this, 78 on the far right, 82 in the middle, and 85 on the far left, where the flexwatt runs. I got these temps using the pro exotics PE-1 temp gun.

So my question is, are these temps alright? Maybe boost up the hot spot a few more degrees? Howe would i accomplish this?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Sounds like the 3" flexwatt is not doing the trick. Can you post a pic of the setup of describe it better. The temp gun is probably reading correctly but is only reading the surface temps of the enclosure; however, the probe on your thermostat is reading air temps. Forum members can give you better heating advice but would need to know more about the setup first.

The temps sound just fine. 85 for your warm side, and high 70's to low 80's on the cool is great.

Yes but the fact that the thermostat unit is set to 105 indicates something is wrong. Ambient temp readings need to be taken with a thermometer. Temp guns only read surface temps. If the 85 degree reading is being taken from sides of the enclosure that is not in contact with the flexwatt, you are probably ok, but if these readings are being taken from the base of the enclosure, directly in contact with the flexwatt, you may not be ok. What type of thermostat are you using? Big Apple makes two. The proportional unit is a very good unit but the $40 BAH unit is junk and the dial reading is not accurate at all. I suggest using a thermometer to get a better reading on the ambient temps.
