Small Snakes

zero742 Mar 04, 2006 09:08 PM

I'm looking for a pretty small snake...like an adult that would get to be around 2 to 2 1/2 feet long. Any ideas? I'm new to the hobby, so I don't know a whole lot.

Also, about how long does it take for a smaller snake to reach its adult length? Thanks in advance.

i believe rosie boas are smaller snakes. around 3 foot i think. asking questions is good but you have to do reserch also on what you want to get.

corns are great beginner snakes. my biggest one is like 4 foot and even that he doesn't look like it all curled up like other post said. corns are also any color imaginable now days.

all snakes are different and grow different depending on how much they eat and are fed so its really hard to tell if its an adult at a certain length. some are power fed to grow fast and some are fed less to make them grow slower. a breeder can tell you more. reptile shows/sales are great if your not sure what to get. there will be lots of snakes and breeders to look at and talk to if you can go to one.

African House snakes top out at those sizes, are easy to feed, inexpensive and very good pets. They just aren't as colorful as Corn Snakes. For a first snake, you can't do better than a Corn Snake. They are the prefect starter - easy to feed, inexpensive, typcially stay lkess than 5 feeet. BTW, that is a lot smaller than most non-snake folks realize. I have a 5 1/2 foot Corn that most people guess at 3-3 1/2 feet. The fact that they are rarely straight makes a big differnece in perspective.

Thayeri kingsnakes, or a Mexican Milksnakes are great choices. As someone else mentioned, African House snskes are also great. Pictured below is my 05 Mexican Milksnake. He'll grow to an adult size of around 24-30 inchs.

They are not only colorful and the adults calm for a milksnake, but for such a small snake they eat mice w/o much trouble, even as hatchlings. Great choice for an easy, small, undemanding pet snake.

Interesting that nobody mentioned a western hognose, these snakes are great and reach a length of 1.5 to 2 feet.
