Nice Pics. Was that a wood turtle that you were releasing? Great growth with your babies. I like the pens as well.
Great job.
Bill G.
Yep, Cypress was a HUGE and OLD male wood turtle. His tail was a nub ending right after his cloaca in a knobby thing (looked like it must have been severely gnawed off maybe a few decades ago) and he was smooth like glass over the top so worn with age. His head was of a proportion more akin to a snapping turtle for his size than a wood turtle. He was a road pickup that was turned loose in the safer area of my parents property which has wood turtles. My parents property is over a 100 acres and includes swamps and streams and borders a valley full of inaccessible swamp and stream. They get wood turtles occasionally banging on the garage doors for some reason.
Thanks for the compliments on the youngsters and pens. Other than the yearling/juvenile pen, the rest are being torn out starting TONIGHT! and quadrupled in size, one with young wood turtles and spotteds will have an 8x16 pond. I'll get a new round of photos when it's all finished being built (maybe some progress shots on the pond). I also need to get some new shots of the '01 juveniles, since one of them has gone almost totally yellow all over his carapace during his hibernation and looks amazing. Each is twice the size they were this time last year and more for most.
Nathan, your place looks great! I loved the pictures of Durk, I'm so glad he's with you and healthy and happy. On two of the links for Dirk that I clicked on I got hatchling pictures though!
Your turtles are amazing and tell your wife I'm going to steal you for a few weeks to re due all my outdoor pens! LOL! Honestly though, your place is the next best thing to turtle heaven! Dawn
OH NOOOOOOOOOO!
I accidently uploaded over some of my photos... dammit. Hopefully I can find the old ones (though I was trying to get them off my home computer that way).
ARG!
I can take new ones soon, though, as soon as we have a nice day. It's supposed to stop raining by Monday (holiday!).
Thanks for the compliments. The pens are MUCH more crazy with plants this year, since almost everything came back (some of the cana did not, all else did) and is growing with a vengence. Those pens are going to be ripped out in the next few weeks to be replaced by pens four times as large. I am going from that row of 8'x8' pens to a grid of four 16'x16' pens. My most populated pen has 5 boxies in it, so in that case they will go from about 12square feet each to 51 square feet each.
I will definately do pictures when I get this expansion done. It's my next step on the way through the Eden project (which I realize will take me many years to complete unless I win the lottery).
