First litter of the year, and a good one

MarcS Mar 05, 2006 04:53 PM

I wasnt sure if my Hypo did the job or the Albino, but now I know it was the Albino. I know alot of people dont like to do the Albino x Albino breedings but I took a chance and it was a good one. First litter of the season and got 29 live big belly Albios and only one just one SLUG I could not believe it. All seem to be fine and no signs of defects. I will post more soon.

I saw that you said most peole dont like albino to albino breedings. Why is that? I figured that would be great if you want to breed albinos.

tsebelis Mar 06, 2006 08:39 AM

Eye defects are more common in Kahl albino stock, possible due introduction of the gene in the ealy years of the stain. Breeding albino to albino can cause defects to turn up. Most breeders breed het to het or albino to het to make eye defects less likely.

Bob Clark has Sharp strain albinos with missing eye defects that he has had for many years and he continues to breed albinoXalbino even though the parents both have missing eyes and a good part of the litter normally turns out to have defects.

There is no substitute for good husbandry.

Mark, I am really glad you informed us of this. I really can't believe that. Thank you.

Wow. I thought eye defects mostly affected Kahl strain. If they affect albinos in general it may be a lack-of-pigment issue, not an inbreeding one. Probably an inbreeding one though.
