Mouth Infection in Croc Monitor

vferra7777 Mar 05, 2006 07:31 PM

I have a 3' croc monitor that just came back from the vet. It has a good case of "mouth rot". he gave me some rinse and an antibiotic. I just need help to make sure I do this right. My idea is to keep the mouth clean, rinse with betadine and keep him warm and humid. How does that sound? What temps do any of you recommend? Any other advice? Please, we need help. I don't want to lose him/her.

How do you tell sex?

Thank you, Vinny

Sounds like what you are doing is good but be very careful. They are loaded with something (many debate what it is, poison and/or bacteria) that can make you sick, I am sure you will see lots of opinions of this now that I have posted. Either way this species has a reputation for bites that take a long time to heal and can be very large even at this size. Also people have been bitten by this species even when thought to be tame, it usually was after a quick movement or loud noise.
Also getting rid of the rot can potentially kill off the naturally good bacteria so including a replacement of this during treatment cant hurt.
