Humidity greatly raised=WILD GECKOS

jasonw Mar 06, 2006 01:38 AM

Hi everyone. I did a little experiment. I greatly raised the humidity levels in my large enclosure the other day. Its to the point it looks like its raining in there. Glass in wet 24-7. I noticed tonight Kirmy has never looked better. With the higher humidity came a lot of energy from her. I have never observed her run so fast when I reached in. Alberto seems a lot more energetic as well. Has anyone ells played with this?

Read my posts under the Fatties and leos thread a bit down from you and you'll see what my methods are.. I keep a general humidity of at least 60-70%.. usually more like 80 percent. They're thin skinned, they dehydrate easily and there is no reason humidity should be so low as most people keep it. Desert does not =no humidity. The animals find the places where humidity is.. and practically live there during the day.

Isnt that putting them at risk for respritory problems?

yes it is. It is also much harder to regulate temps in an enclosure that is so wet. While I do maintain that most people keep their leos at too low a humidity (20 or so), (see my post on desert life of leos above) I think that humidity up in the 80 range is in fact too high. I would say I wouldnt go that high unless it was a temporary raise in reference to shed problems, or a reading inside the humid hide. I have used 80% humidities for sick geckoes on the mend, though this is more due the dehydrating effects of their meds. I prob would not recommend going much higher than 50-60 on a regular basis, and do keep a closer eye on temps in that case.

Interesting. Curently the humidity has gone down and they are siting at 60%. I guess that being said we can asume a reptile with resperitory problems "One of my Boas Maybe" it would aid in recovery to lower the relitive humidity?

It's possible. I'm not really much of a boa expert lol. And I think most animals would benefit from slightly high temps AND humidity when ill. And it depends on the respiratory problem (ie. mucous/congestion vs. irritation/inflammation) and the meds.
