New Tank Setup (pics)

phiber_optikx Mar 06, 2006 04:22 AM

I finally made the switch to carpet. I switched 4 cages to carpet for $8.50. Isn't 1 "reptile carpet" at petsmart like $10? Lowes is better as long as you don't mind cutting it yourself. Maybe if I post enough pics one will get in the "week in review!" There are several bonuses to carpet so far. Cleaner, easier to clean, looks nicer (imo) The only down side is that when they do go it smells a LOT stronger! But you can spot clean and rub a little bit of anti-bacterial hand wash on the spot. Good as new! BTW corn snakes and black rats have the same metabolism if anyone was interested. They ate within 15 minutes of each other and all 3 went withing 4 hours of each other. Also threw in a neat picture of Hope whenever she thought it would be funny to escape right in front of me.

I'm not a big fan of carpet. I've seen to many belly infections. And totally disagree on spot cleaning. If any fecal matter is there you may disinfect the surface but not inside it. It would be like having dried dirt on your hands, you use hand disinfectant without washing your hands. IMHO

Carpet sure looks nice, and a very very nice setup. But if I were to do carpet again, I'd have a ton of extras and rotate them once a week even if the snake does not defecate.

very nice setup

I was using the reptile carpet for a while. With as many animals as I have, it took me all day to scrub those things. I descovered after about the 4th time, the smell was not getting out of them very well.
As for using carpet from home improvement stores, I was wondering about that. I was just thinking about any chemicals that might be added in them. I noticed an odd oder from a peice of carpet from home stores. I actually got my reptile carpet from reptilesupply.com, real cheap. But now, I have a whole bag of the stuff because I switched to aspen. I agree though, that the carpet looks so much better. I also have some sliding glass doors on my displays and the carpet was not a problem, where everything else has gotten in the runners. Everything else also seems to get on my floor! My snakes (and lizards at the time) always found a way under the carpet no matter what I did. If it weren't for the scrubbing and smell, I might still use them.

I really don't mind the 3 minutes of cleaning compared to the hours of cleaning the other cages. I was pretty carefull when cutting so nobody has gotten under the carpet yet. I find that if you scrub a little hand sanitizer onto the area after washing it with water it then it doesn't smell.
