Turtle for apartments

wolfwoman Mar 06, 2006 10:25 AM

Hello all,
I'm a snake owner and would like to get a non-aquatic turtle, like an eastern box turtle, however I live in an apartment and would not be able to provide an outdoor enclosure, but could let it roam outside for periods of time (supervised of course!). If not an eastern box turtle, are there other types that would do well being inside most of the time?
Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi,

Box turtles have been kept inside long term, but in my experience (and I do stress that this is just my experience) they need fairly substantial enclosures with a deep substrate, UVB, supplementary heating etc. I keep mine in cages that measure 4 feet by 8 feet by 6 feet high and that's not really practical for most appartments. Tortoises in general, depending on the species need similar or greater space.

One that might fit the bill, if you can find a specimen, is the Egyptian tortoise - Testudo kleinmanni. I've attached a link for you that will give you a general idea about care. Good luck.

Look into Russian Tortoises. they're small. Nice, personable and I've found to be EASY to feed. Mine eats everything i give him.
