looking to buy

dvlnblkvans Mar 06, 2006 10:56 AM

Hi everyone, I'm looking to buy a corn snake but i don't like the ones in the pet stores. Every time i have decided to give a pet store corn a try he ends up being a non eater. Not to meantion do they way over charge me for them. So i was wondering if anyone could help me out on some good breeders, maybe if they have a website or something i can check out. I don't want to just pick a name off a list and hope they're good breeders and end up with a dead corn. I would really appriciate your help.

Thanx,
Jaime

I would say look for a breeder in your area before you look on the internet for a website, shipping can be quite expensive for a snake...with that said most of the sites on this site are pretty ok, I have had no problems with any of them, they all seem to be stand up people....hope this helped some

check to see if there are any reptile shows coming to your area. this is a great place to meet and talk with the breeders. The prices are generally pretty good. If you want to go the inernet route I think any of the ones at the top of this forum are good. I have personally dealt with Kathy Love and you cant do any better than her before, during and after the sale. Don at south mountain has a great rep as well. good luck.

I understand how you feel about pet shops, but! I also help an old friend at his. 40 years same place same owner and we did herps from day 1.

Just like anything else, you get the good the bad and the ugly. Most shops do herps as a sideline and rarely know much. And worse place up for sale herp they get in fresh. We've held box turtles and torts for 4 months before feeling good about offering them.

My point, not all shops are bad. I will agree most are not good.
I was recently in a big corp place to buy some stock for "me". Stock is ok, and mom and pop shops can not compete. But I heard a girl tell a lady BCI's get over 16'. Well, I busted up laughing, they looked and I froze. The girl working there was one of my customers by chance. She said, OH, talk to him. 45 minutes later, I was done.

Just be an educated consumer. As most people in here are. But, most people are not. And being in retail, I can tell you most people go to corns and leos and beardies after they learn proper care for turtles. And -4" are illegal.

Help the newbies if you see one in a shop. Odds are whom ever is reading this knows 1000x more than the person selling it.

Just a point of view

This is Kathy Loves site. She and her husband are kind of like the "pioneers" of corn snake husbandry. She will answere any questions you have, and help with your new baby corn even after it arrives, until you are satisfied and confient on your own. Check out her site but remember there is not a lot available yet until this years eggs hatch.
