Question regarding Great Stuff..

jusmebabe Mar 06, 2006 11:51 AM

I am going to continue with making my tank as simple as possible until I get the hang of things.
Instead of usig silicone, can I just spray Great Stuff and put the coco bedding over it?
I'm not going to put driftwood on the Great Stuff but I figure the way it rises it would have the ridges so the back and sides won't look so one dimensional.
Thanx for any input..
Joel

no, you can't do that, it would not stick to it, i have made two tanks using great stuff and: first put the great stuff on (allow it to seal for 36 hrs) and then put the GE black silicone on and the dirt on(make sure the dirt is dry) and then let that sit for at least 36 hrs, or until it stops smelling. here are pics of the ones I did, the first I redid so you can't see the white stuff, good luck!

Jusme.. Yes, you can just put the coco into the greatstuff if you do it shortly after it is sprayed, and use a lot of it. I have seen it done before, and while it worked.. It doesn't cover as well. There is a black foam that is similar to greatstuff (you can get it at fosterandsmith.com) that is intended for outdoor pond work.. this might work better as the black will not look as bad in the bare spots.

Anyways.. to get the best results, silicone over the dry greatstuff and then add coco..

I'll do the spray and then silicone over it.
