Feeding redworms

mr-zikit Mar 06, 2006 02:03 PM

can anyone tell me if its ok to feed chameleon red worm/earth worm? im not sure wht its called or the proper name but its actually a staple fish diet which can be found in almost any pet store. it is thin (thread-like) and less than an inch in length. hard to see it move as it is often kinda "glued" together in a dark red gooey mass. do chams eat them ? any long term side-effects? ive come accross these numerous times and was just wondering. thts all; never tried it........

I really doubt any cham would see this as food. Also, if the worms are wet enough the cham's tongue won't stick to it enough for them to get them to their mouths. Some red worms have a bitter tasting mucous coat and many herps won't eat them.

What you're describing sounds like tubifex worms. Aquatic worms that
are often collected and sold for fish food. Don't feed those to
chameleons. I don't know if they're good or bad, but I just wouldn't do
it!

Earthworms, large or small, have been fed with mixed results. Most
chameleons won't eat them, they don't like the taste or something.
Some will.

A friend of mine had more than a dozen leopard geckos die after a
caretaker fed them earthworms dug up in the backyard. They got
some parasite they were unable to deal with. I avoid them.
