JCP won't eat...Why?

snakesnmore Mar 06, 2006 03:26 PM

I have an 4yr old 7ft male JCP who has'nt eaten in a month now. Nothing has changed with his temps or his enviroment. I have tried everything from live, frozen, and small rats and mice. He'll go as far as smelling them and then just turn away from them. I've been trying every other day. The past week in a half he has been extremly active like he's searching for something. I was wondering if he may be looking for a mate since its that time of year. He's never done this before and he's never missed a meal either. If this continues for the next couple of weeks I'll take him the the vet. Does any one have any idea how long is too long without them eating. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks.

yeah,it sounds like he's looking for some "company",wink, wink, nudge, nudge.every male carpet i've ever had that was older than 3 years did almost the exact same thing, not eating, endless roaming, etc.honestly,i would find him some punnany,if it was my snake.is that a full blood jungle,or a diamond x jungle?no real reason, just curious.hope this helps!

I have an 8ft Female that is only eating about once a month, even though I offer food every week. She's still shedding often and is in good health. The older she gets the less she eats it seems.

I wouldnt even begin to worry about it. Sometimes they cycle even when we are not trying to get them to. Im sure he is in breeding mode. He should snap out of it eventually, mine usually do around day light savings time whether I intentionally cycle them or not. I have found that females will occassionally do the same thing.

do not worry. i have a 4 year 7 foot male also and he is doing the same thing. he ate back in september. stoped eating. finally ate in december. stoped eating. finally ate like a couple weeks ago and now i think he is in shedding mode. haven't seen him out in over a week. mine was also very restless wanting out. i would let him out just so he can have some time out of his cage and stretch out.
i would stop trying to offer him food every other day. it won't do any good. try more like every couple weeks. that is what i've been doing and one day he decided he would eat. so you really don't need to worry or take him to the vet yet. give him more time and then try to feed him. i have never bred any of my snakes so i'm not about the get him a mate just because.
just my 2 cents.

Ok, my carpet is doing the same thing. Everytime I hang the mouse in his face he turns away. He slithers back and forth in his cage as if he's looking for a mate. But I have been getting him to eat with in the last few weeks by sitting there for 20 to 25 minutes blocking his snout with the mouse, and following him around with the dead mouse. Totally annoying him with it and at certain times bumping his nose with it lol. Eventually he grabs it from me and once he gets the taste for one then he's in feeding mode. You can get him to eat with a certain amount of patience. Just my two cents, it's been working for me.

My 4ft, 1 year old, female, JCP is in the same mode. She has always been a ravenous eater, but since the beginning of February she has only eaten a few times and only one mouse at a time. I haven’t changed the light cycle, humidity or temp so I think they just some how know it’s that time of the year. Oh well, she still looks healthy. Yours doesn’t look like he is starving yet eater.
I was hoping to fatten my JCP and IJ up before trying to convert them to rats again. I had them on rats but ran out of the right size.
Good luck!
